Living Soils Symposium

Dates: March 18 to 21 2020

Description:  The Living Soils Symposium is a four-day bilingual event organized by Regeneration Canada on various themes related to the regeneration of soil health as a solution to climate change and as a means of supporting healthy agri-food systems.

Soil regeneration responds to several challenges of our society: climate change, water pollution, resilience to floods and droughts, as well as health and food insecurity. Our event therefore seeks to have a social and environmental impact, by raising awareness among the various Canadian stakeholders of the role that each can play in contributing to soil regeneration.

The Symposium is an event to learn, exchange and develop collaborations and is the only one in the country to bring together such a diversity of people, including farmers, agronomists, citizens, businesses, NGOs and public decision makers. This year, we are expecting over 600 participants. In addition to presentations and panels on a variety of topics, a lot of time and space is left for networking and connecting with other participants.

Hours:
March 18: 5:30-8pm
March 19-20: 8:30am - 8pm
March 21: 8:30am - 5:30pm

Life of a Craphead

Dazibao is pleased to announce the inauguration of two new public billboard works, located on the façades of Café Cherrier and the Bonsecours Market.

An off-site extension of our exhibition programming, dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary image practices, Dazibao satellite aims to stimulate discussions around current social issues and the integration of art into everyday life.

Dazibao is excited to be presenting $100 Bill With South Asian Scientist Added Back In, a work especially conceived by the artist duo Life of a Craphead for Dazibao satellite. With these two impressive images, the artists revise and reimagine the history of the $100 Canadian bill.

In light of recent changes made to the new $10 Canadian bill, which features for the first time a racialized Canadian historical figure, Viola Desmond, the artists revisit a 2012 controversy around the potential design of a new $100 Canadian bill. The original design, presented in 2012, included the depiction of a scientist. However, after having supposedly received a number of critiques vis-à-vis the scientist appearing too “Asian-looking,” the design was changed in favour of a more “ethnically neutral” (meaning White) depiction ― an incident which solicited a formal apology from the Bank of Canada.

Applying the critical approach and frank yet understated humour that is often seen in their works, the artists have re-rendered what they imagine the rejected 100$ bill might have looked like, in order to bring to discussion the under-representation of minority groups in the landscape of the Canadian imagery. At the Bonsecours Market, a larger-than-life sized $100 bill undoubtedly catches the eye. But upon closer inspection, you might notice that something is indeed different; that is, only if you are lucky enough to be familiar with the bill or if you have one in your pocket! At Café Cherrier, the variant detail is magnified for us to see: a South Asian scientist replaces the white one. The difference is subtle, and yet it incites us to interrogate the multiple ways in which power is exercised, especially through an object so highly sought out.

LES RURBAINS

2016 Congress - AAPQ (Association des architectes paysagistes du Québec)

Les Rurbains - Rurban - Rethinking the Boundaries of Landscape

April 1st and 2nd, 2016

A major environmental design event in Québec, the AAPQ’s annual Congress will again this year host speakers, panelists and artists from Québec and abroad to explore a topic that is both complex and inspiring, and that revolves around the issues faced by environmental design professionals.

While the agricultural population in Quebec accounts for just 1% of the total population, and while teleworking makes many professionals independent from major centers, the importance of territories multi-functionality is increasingly recognized, one can observe how several major cities worldwide are declining and how the role of the landscape architect and design professional is being redrawn and is becoming more complex.

Rurban imagines the borders between rural and urban landscapes by exploring interstices landscapes, hybrid and reversed, which while seeking to redefine themselves, carry a history and local culture that need to be asserted in this renewed reality.

An exhibition hall bringing together the network of suppliers connected to environmental design will be accessible for $25 from 10:00 to 15:00 on Friday, April 1st.

Leitmotifs looks at the most iconic patterns by presenting nearly 100 pieces from the museum’s collection alongside creations by several Québécois guest designers: Betina Lou, Coloré Design, Niapsou Design and Travis Taddeo. There will also be hundreds of neckties on display.
